Although the lazy eye gives a normal appearance, its visual acuity is low. Lazy eye is an eye condition where one eye is weaker than the other. It occurs in children and usually affects only one eye. This “lazy” eye looks normal, but has poor vision.

CAUSES:

The brain and eyes must work together to see. Blurred vision occurs when the brain and one eye do not work together. Over the course of the time the vision becomes blurred. The connection between the lazy eye and the brain is not correct. All of these visual objects looks vague and hazy. The lazy eye is further aggravated by the lack of proper communication between the eye and the brain. Lack of sharpness of vision and inability to see fine detail.

      • •  Squint (eyes are crossed or point in different directions)
      • •  Difference in refractive power (spectacles) between the eyes (one eye may focus better than the other)
      • •  Severe eyelid drooping
      • •  Cataract
      • •  Premature birth
      • •  Small eye size at birth
      • •  Developmental disabilities.

SYMPTOMS:

•  One eye deviates inward or outward
•  Both eyes do not work together
•  Closing one eye to focus
•  Abnormal eye movements
•  Abnormal head posture

TREATMENT :

Your doctor will explain to you the best treatment for your child. Treatment depends on your child's age and the cause of the lazy eye disease.

SPECTACLES:

You may need glasses to improve your child's eyesight. Spectacles to help both eyes work together and to focus both eyes on the same image . Your child should always wear it .

PATCHING:

Concealing and hiding the normal eye can help to strengthen the lazy eye. Your doctor will explain to you how often and for how long patching is needed. The doctor may need to check your child frequently to see if the treatment given is effective.

EYE DROPS :

Sometimes a doctor may prescribe special eye drops to blur the vision in a strong eye. This will make the lazy eye work harder.

EYE TRAINING:

SYNAPTOPHORE:

For children with amblyopia, this will help to  determine the extent of the change in eye muscle balance. If the eye nerve is weak (Loss of Binocular Vision) it can be corrected with the help of treatment with this machine.

(VR) AVAILABLE FROM VIRTUAL REALITY:

Under the guidance of an ophthalmologist, a VR headset can be used to improve eye coordination, hand-eye coordination, deep perception and reaction time.

SURGERY:

•  squint.
•  Cataract.
•  Ptosis - Eyelid drooping.
•  Cancer or abnormal growth.
